PTE Score For 189 Visa

According to the Australian Department of Home Affairs, the minimum PTE score for the 189 visas is 50, equivalent to Competent English. However, if you’d like to be invited to apply for this visa, you should get at least 65, or Proficient English.

In particular, you get 10 points for Proficient English (65 to 78) and 20 points for Superior English (at least 79). These points are the criteria for getting an invitation.

Remember, the score for each component in the test should not be below 65 if you want an invitation for the visa. Also, the exam should be taken within 3 years before the date of invitation.

For those who don’t know, the 189 visa, or the Skilled Independent Visa (subclass 189), is a permanent residency visa. Its main target is employees whose family members or employers do not sponsor them.

So, a great command of English is necessary for your work and daily life.

How To Get A PTE 65 Score? 9 Tasks To Focus On

Read Aloud

The “Read Aloud” part requires you to read the passage clearly once the beep sound is played. To get a good score, you must practice your speaking fluency. It means speaking in a fluent tone without long pauses or hesitation.

In addition, you should take notice of the content. Remember to include all words of the provided passage in your speech. Any removal or addition of words can negatively affect the meaning.

Repeat Sentence

The “Repeat Sentence” section assesses your speaking, listening, and memorizing skills. You must repeat what you’ve heard from the audio.

The most important thing for this part is to listen and take notes carefully. You don’t have a second chance to re-listen, so listen to the sentence with undivided attention. Then, speak slowly and steadily to ensure your oral fluency and pronunciation.

Describe Image

As its name suggests, this section requires you to describe the given picture using your own words and phrases. In other words, it tests your ability to express ideas and assess your vocabulary resources.

When doing this part, you should not speak too fast. Just remain at a slow pace. If not, you will likely forget what you are going to say. See the picture clearly to avoid missing any important details.

Retell Lecture

In this part, candidates are provided with an academic lecture or speech, and they must retell it in their expression of words.

To succeed in the PTE “Retell Lecture,” you must listen to the lecture carefully and note key points and relevant details. Then, convey it slowly to ensure you have mentioned all the necessary information.

Write From Dictation

The “Write From Dictation” task requires test-takers to listen to a short passage or a series of sentences and then type what they have heard.

When conquering this section, you must stay 100% focused so as not to miss any important information. Apart from listening skills, you should also practice your memorizing skills to remember as many words as possible.

Summarize Spoken Text

Moving to the “Summarize Spoken Text,” candidates listen to audio and summarize its topic and key points into a written summary of between 50 and 70 words.

Like the “Write From Dictation” section, you must practice listening and memorizing skills. If you are very good at listening but cannot write information down, you won’t get high scores in this section.

Fill In Blanks – Listening

Candidates will listen to a recording and try to fill in the blank spaces in the text with missing words or phrases.

In this section, you should have a rich source of vocabulary. If you detect the missing words yet don’t know how to spell them, you won’t likely get a good score.

Fill In Blanks – Reading

Being presented with a written passage, test-takers must read, comprehend, and select correct words or phrases to fill blank spaces in the text.

Reading skills are assessed in this section. If you want to figure out the missing words, you must understand the meaning of whole sentences and a passage. This way, you can choose a proper word or phrase to replace the blank space.

Re-order Paragraphs

This task is quite tricky for numerous test-takers. The whole paragraph contains many sentences that are out of order. Their mission is to re-order them logically to form a coherent paragraph.

This section is indeed complicated, as it requires diverse sources of vocabulary, grammar, critical thinking, etc. To master those, you must enrich and practice relentlessly. Also, take close notice of the timeframe.

If you feel overwhelmed by the great amount of knowledge, find help from PTE Magic courses. The trainers will help you navigate the journey to achieve a desired PTE score.
