Overview Of PTE Core Summarize Written Text

pte core summarize written text

This question type requires you to summarize the prompt in 25 to 50 words. The prompt can be as long as 200 words, and you have 10 minutes to summarize its main points.

The word count is presented at the bottom of the screen to help you keep track more easily. Copy, cut, and paste buttons are available to help you write the summary more quickly and effectively.

This part evaluates your reading and writing skills. So, you must read the prompt carefully and note the most important information. Then, you need to arrange those key points in a logical and concise passage.

Here is how your answer will be scored:

  • Content: Your summary must cover all the key points while still delivering the purpose of the original prompt. When you miss only 1 or 2 points, you will earn 1 point. You won’t receive a score if you fail to convey the main idea.
  • Form: Your summary’s length should be between 25 and 50 words. Extending beyond this range means you get a lower point or even no points (5-25 or 51-60 words: 1 point; less than 5 words or over 60 words: 0 points).
  • Grammar: Your response must have a correct grammatical structure. The ideal summary should contain a main and subordinate clause. If there are grammatical errors, but they don’t affect the delivery of the ideas, you still gain 1 point.
  • Vocabulary: Your word choice should be appropriate in the academic setting. Using synonyms is highly valued because it shows your variety and flexibility in language use.

4 Proven Tips For PTE Core Summarize Written Text

Answer In The Correct Form

As mentioned, you only get the highest score when writing a summary within 25 to 50 words. Each sentence must start with a capital letter and end with a full stop. Otherwise, the AI scoring system can recognize it as a complete sentence.

Use Complex And Compound Sentences

Although this part requires a summary, it doesn’t mean you can write all simple sentences. Instead, alternate between complex, compound, and simple sentences to convey the information better.

Varying the sentence structure allows you to include the supporting details more effectively.

Use Correct Grammar And Conjunctions

Grammar errors will negatively affect your score. One or two mistakes are acceptable, and only reduce your point by 1. However, you won’t get any points if those errors hinder communication.

Additionally, pay attention to the tense used in the prompt. You should use the same tense in your answer to deliver the same information.

Another thing to remember is to use conjunctions. Words like additionally, furthermore, moreover, and also are common conjunctions to maintain a smooth flow.

Practice With Mock Tests

The easiest way to practice PTE Core Summarize Written Text is to take mock tests.

These materials familiarize you with the test format and sharpen your reading and writing skills. Over time, you can quickly scan through the prompt and grasp the main points.

PTE Magic is the way to go if you want a reliable platform to take these tests. The mock tests there mimic the real test with an AI scoring system, ensuring the best experience.
